Botanical Garden Celebrates Opening New Azalea Garden with Special Festival on Mother‘s Day Weekend
April 26, 2011

The New York Botanical Garden opens a glorious new 11-acre Azalea Garden with an old-fashioned Garden Party on Mother’s Day weekend, May 7–8, 2011. Visitors will have the opportunity to step back in time and enjoy playing croquet, flying kites, and picnicking among the azaleas. Children can don Victorian-era costumes, take pictures, and make cards just in time to give to mom, while docent-led tours will point out highlights of the Garden’s collection.

A second weekend of festivities takes place on May 14–15, 2011, and includes home-gardening demonstrations, as well as instruction in photography, botanical illustration, and watercolor.

Featuring one of the largest and most diverse displays of the beloved plant, the new Azalea Garden is a key component of the Botanical Garden’s 120th-anniversary year, and is one of the most important collections of its kind in the world. The Azalea Garden is a project of Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Chilton, Jr.
