Overview:
Access/ABILITY was created by the Boston Children's Museum to
celebrate the capabilities in all of us. This highly interactive, yet sensitive
disability awareness exhibit delivers the message that as human beings, we are
more alike than different.
Access/ABILITY features engaging activities that show how all people -
with or without disabilities - go places, communicate, have fun, and
learn.

Children can experience how we all get around in "Going Places," with a multi-sensory City Walk and a wheelchair obstacle course to maneuver through.
"Come Talk With Me" explores different ways of communicating. Visitors can learn phrases in American Sign Language, type their names in Braille, practice speech reading, and communicate using pictures.
In "Just For Fun," children will enjoy trying out a hand-pedaled bike, and creating art that can be experienced through sight, touch, and sounds. |
The "Invent It" exhibit area features a design challenge demonstrating how things can be created to work for the greatest number of people. "Think About It" asks, "What Kind of Smart Are You?" as children identify different learning styles.
Throughout the exhibit, "My Way" kiosks introduce individuals living with
disabilities who talk about themselves, their accomplishments, and how they
overcome challenges in their lives.
"This unique exhibit shows how we all do the same things; just in different ways," says Brooklyn Children's Museum President Carol Enseki. "We hope access/ABILITY will increase visitors' awareness of a broad range of disabilities, and foster communication around disability issues."
A resource area in the exhibit provides a quiet space where visitors can learn more about disabilities through books and computer resources.
