Flushing
Town Hall New York
Location: 137-35 Northern Blvd., Flushing
Erected in 1864, Flushing Town Hall is a Romanesque Revival
style building. It has always served as the cultural center of the community. The
Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts was founded in 1979 to address a need for
arts advocacy in the borough of Queens. Their mission is to make the arts a central
part of life and to be a creative and revitalizing force for developing the arts
in the community.
The Council meets this mission by creating innovative
visual arts programs that represent and serve the diverse interests and backgrounds
of the greater New York metropolitan area. Professional development opportunities
for visual artists include: seminars, exhibitions, technical and marketing assistance,
professional consultations and teaching residencies. The Council promotes events
through exhibits and events, opera, evenings of classical music presentations, jazz,
theater, film showings, culture tours, and education. They reach the entire community
by sending a trolley to different areas of town.
