Metropolitan
Opera New York
Location: Lincoln Center, New York
The Metropolitan Opera, housed in an elegantly-appointed
building in New York's Lincoln Center, complete with deep red carpets and spiral
staircases, has been offering the best in culture to the city and its visitors since
it opened in 1883 with Gounod's opera, Faust. Today, the stars of the Metropolitan
Opera still present such classics but also offer the best in contemporary opera
as well. Because an opera singer's ultimate goal is to "sing at the Met", audience
members are guaranteed the best of the art and the season is varied enough so that
new opera-goers, including adolescents, can choose an appropriate "first-time" opera
that's easy to understand. For families who'd prefer to pass on the opera, consider
the backstage tour. Kids are welcome and tour attendees have the opportunity to
view the production areas not seen by the general public and learn how such elaborate
productions can go off without a hitch. The onsite Opera Shop offers wonderful recordings
of the world's most famous operas, books and opera libretti, Met merchandise, opera
art, and other fine gifts, including children's books about dance and opera and
other items for the younger set.
