There are few places like NYC for a Family Holiday
Many choose to visit during the summer months when school’s out. That’s a great time to head to NY! Manhattan is alive and kicking in the summer, with outdoor festivals, concerts, and so much more for families to enjoy.
First things first: We love New York, and while we'd find it irresistible anytime of the year, Summer's in the East Coast can be brutal. However, summer is indeed one of the most popular times to visit New York, so you've got to be prepared for the heat. You’ll be comfortable in short sleeves and t-shirts. A good idea is to carry an umbrella as summer thunderstorms can ruin your parade.
Getting Around New York... Generally speaking, the best way to get around New York and see tourist attractions with the kids is public transportation. Families can travel quickly by subway, with a free transfer to buses, to get nearer to your destination.
Taxis Taxicabs are convenient to move between close locations, although they quickly become expensive.
Current cab fares: Initial fare, $2.50, each 1/5 mile (4 blocks), $0.40, each 1 minute idle $0.40, peak surcharge $1.00 (after 4pm until 8pm Mon-Fri), night surcharge $0.50 (after 8pm until 6am), plus a 15-percent tip is expected. So a 1-mile ride costs about $6 to $8, plus tip.
Subway Using the subway is an excellent way to get around the city and we highly recommend it. Parents must be careful to watch that their kids don’t stand too close to the tracks, don’t run on stairs, etc. Most midtown and downtown subway stations now have passenger elevators that make it a lot easier to get in and out of the subway with kids in strollers. This is not yet the case in many subway stations in the outlying boroughs and upper Manhattan.
Subways cost $2 for a single fare, which includes one bus transfer, and there is no charge for up to 3 kids below the height of 44 inches, that is until about 7 or 8 years old, who are with a paying adult.
You can also purchase a Metro card for unlimited rides: 1-day ticket for $7.50 7-days ticket for $25 30-days ticket for $81
Although the subway cars are generally comfortable and cooled or heated as necessary, some caution is warranted: many stations are not air-conditioned and the cars are very crowded during weekday rush hours, morning and evening.
These Shoes Were Made For Walking... NYC is best explored on foot—every city block can really be a point of exploration and revealing amazing sides of Manhattan. Save the public transportation for times when you’re in a hurry or just too tired to walk. Once you’re underground, you’ll miss all the things New York has to offer.

Find a Kid-Friendly Hotel... Probably the only city in the world where one can lay their head down to rest in a hotel room that is 70 or more stories in the sky is Manhattan, and after a long day of sightseeing and walking around this metropolis both parents and kids will want a comfortable and safe place to do just that.
There are quite a number of New York hotels that are family appropriate--if not down right kid-friendly--so you'll be pleased to know that your families needs will be met while in the Big Apple.
A couple that we recommend are The Hilton New York and Doubletree New York Hotel. The Hilton New York offers the Vacation Station program: fun gifts on arrival and a selection of board games to enjoy for kids. What a great way to check in!
Kids will love staying at the Doubletree enjoying their unique Build-A-Bear Workshop® Pawsitively Fun Package. This beary fun package includes one Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Bunk Trunk filled with lots of fun items for your bear provided upon check-in.
Now, really, it doesn't get any more fun for kids than this! Check out our full write-up on Family Hotels in New York because there are more where these came from.
