York Public Library New York
Location: Fifth Ave. and 42nd St., New York
The New York Public Library, with nearly 100 branches
located throughout Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island, has been instrumental
in supplying educational materials and offering classes and special events to New
York's residents and visitors for more than 100 years. The main library in midtown
Manhattan, an incredible piece of classic architecture, was completed in 1902 and
together with all the branches, houses one of the most extensive collections in
the world, rivaling the Library of Congress and the British Library. The New York
Public Library system also includes four research libraries for all your professional
needs; the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, the New York Public Library for
the Performing Arts, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and the
Science, Industry, and Business Library. The libraries welcome all, offering not
only a myriad of books, other printed materials, digital collections, and recordings,
but also a number of special events year round, including classes and workshops
for children, exhibits, poetry readings, and visits by top authors from many genres.
