York City Ballet New York
Location: Lincoln Center, Broadway and 64th St., New York
The New York City Ballet, one of the largest and best-known
ballet companies in the country, performs many programs each year at Lincoln Center's
beautiful New York State Theater. The brainchild of dancers Lincoln Kirstein and
George Ballanchine, this ballet company has been in existence since the 1930s though
it has changed quite a bit since then. Today the company has about 90 dancers with
an active repertory of more than 150 works. In addition to performances at their home theater, the New York City Ballet has appeared worldwide including Australia,
Brazil, Japan, and Taiwan as well as many major U.S. cities. Little girls seem to
especially love ballet and many of those performed by the NYC Ballet each year are
appropriate for young audiences. Families visiting New York can enjoy the ballet
company's amazingly varied program at the New York State Theater from September
through June, choosing from such favorites as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and A Midsummer
Night's Dream to shorter pieces and more contemporary works.
