Overview:
A Touch of the Poet, one of Eugene O’Neill’s lesser known plays, is set in a rundown old tavern in New England in the year 1828.

This play, which first appeared on Broadway in 1974, profiles Cornelius Melody, a frustrated, down-and-out Irish immigrant who refuses to face the harsh realities of life in a new country and holds onto his status as a fine European gentleman.

With finances drained, he battles constantly with his daughter Sara, who attempts to make him realize the truth about his life in America.

When his daughter falls for the son of a wealthy American business man, things become even more complicated for the proud Irishman.

As is true of most plays by Eugene O’Neill, who won four Pulitzer Prizes as well as the Noble Prize for Literature, the script is well-written and engaging, with exceptional actors who add dimension to the already enticing characters.

Many critics have compared this play to O’Neill’s other great American family dramas, such as A Moon for the Misbegotten and Long Day’s Journey into Night.

The show is extremely romantic and the message is upbeat.
