Overview
Camp Broadway® was founded in 1995
and exists today because of the commitment and support of many people working on
or around Broadway who are dedicated to making the theatre accessible to young
people.
Summer Theatre Programs
The summer theatre programs are the highlight of the busy year when
theatre-loving kids are introduced to the world of Broadway and all aspects of
putting on a show in a professional, interactive, and theatrical environment.
The program fosters teamwork, discipline, commitment, and support, lessons that
will resonate in all areas of our campers’ lives, long after they leave the CAMP
BROADWAY® family.
Here are just a few of our most popular programs:
CAMP BROADWAY® – New York City (Ages 10 – 17)
CAMP BROADWAY® – Rising Stars™ Summer Program (Ages 6–9)
CAMP BROADWAY® – Master Class Career Discovery Program™ (Ages 13 – 17)
CAMP BROADWAY® – New York City
For five unforgettable, non-stop days, young people ages 10 to 17 from all over
the world participate in our summer theatre program in the heart of the New York
City theatre district. We introduce campers to the world of Broadway through
classes in dance, voice, acting, as well as various workshops such as make-up,
stage combat, physical comedy, and mask work and other related subjects. And
since all this requires loads of energy, we provide our campers healthy lunch,
snacks, and drinks daily.
This summer, as always, we're offering a week full of special surprises,
including workshops with Broadway artists, plus our ninth annual Salute to
Singin' and Dancin' Kids luncheon, where
campers get to meet kids currently performing on Broadway. They also get a
ticket to see the Wednesday matinee of a Broadway show. Past years' shows
include Gypsy and Kiss Me Kate!
On the last day, campers present the Family Finale, a fabulous presentation for
family and friends to witness exactly what went into these extraordinary five
days. The presentation highlights include "mini-musicals" -past shows include
Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma, Fiddler on the Roof, and On the Town. It also includes
our traditional Gypsy Showcase, which requires our campers to work together as a
team to create an original two-minute musical number that showcases both their
inventiveness and individual talents
MASTER CLASS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The Master Class Career Discovery Program™ offers participants ages 13-17
one-on-one training in acting, voice, and dance. Our working theatre
professionals challenge Master Class Career Discovery Program™ participants to
surpass the level at which they are currently performing, through workshops,
classes and rehearsals that focus students' attention in a variety of areas such
as instruction in vocal technique and performance, sight singing and song
interpretation, monologue work, scene study, and intensive work in ballet, tap,
jazz and musical theatre dance.
As part of the Master Class Career Discovery Program™, we invite lunchtime
guests to speak on relevant topics such as the history and styles of musical
theatre, future training options (e.g., liberal arts vs. professional theatre
school), getting the right headshot, and other realities of a performer's life.
We have also assembled appropriate books, magazines, articles and listings to
serve as resources for participants as they continue their training.
On the last day of the Master Class Career Discovery Program™, participants
learn, rehearse, and perform a Broadway musical scene, in classes taught by
professional Broadway performers (including, David Eggers of Thoroughly Modern
Millie, Janet Rothermel of Mamma Mia!, and Kelly Crandall from The Boy from Oz).
Participants present solos for parents, friends, and peers, and for a panel of
Broadway celebrities who offer written comments and a critique of each student's
performance.
CAMP BROADWAY® – Rising Stars™ Program
The newest summer program, CAMP BROADWAY® – Rising Stars™ Program, allows our
youngest theatre-lovers, ages 6-9, to get in on the CAMP BROADWAY® act! The
program will include five days of classes in singing and dancing as well as
workshops from theatre professionals in mask making, storytelling, make-up, and
rhythm. It also includes many of the elements that have made our original camp
so famous, including lunch with Broadway guests
and the Family Finale, a final presentation for family and friends.
