Overview:
A classic has returned to Broadway. Tennessee William's poignant play "The Glass
Menagerie" opened at The Ethel Barrymore Theater in late March and has proven to
be a hit with theater lovers.
|
The cast of the play, which appeared on Broadway for the first time in 1945, is probably its greatest asset though the story is certainly timeless.
Leading the way is Jessica Lange as Amanda Wingfield, the loving yet domineering matriarch of the family.
Critics have described her performance as stunning.
|
The main
male role, Tom Wingfield, is played by Christian Slater, more well-known for his
movie appearances than for his stage work. Tom, who also serves as the play's
narrator,
struggles with his devotion to family and his desire to leave 1930s St. Louise.
Frail sister Laura Wingfield is played by relative newcomer Sarah Paulson, who
handles the role with finesse. The play is said to be somewhat autobiographical,
reflecting the life of Tennessee Williams and the family members around him. The
Glass Menagerie was Williams' first real success.
