Overview:
Jay Johnson: The Two and Only brings to Broadway (after a run in L.A.) the
unique ventriloquism talents of Johnson, a favorite of viewers of the TV series
“Soap.” Even those who profess not to like ventriloquism acts are sure to be
|
delighted by Johnson’s wacky presentation, which includes such goofy characters as a monkey and even a tennis ball.
Throughout the show, it’s clear that Johnson considers his craft an art form and not a gimmick.
In fact, he discusses the history of ventriloquism and demonstrates its various permutations, while unveiling the likes of a frightened snake and a vulture, as well as the traditional “ventriloquist’s dummy.”
They are treated
as if they are quite real, and the effect can be startling. |
Johnson also manages to
weave in his oddball, schizophrenic “Bob” character from “Soap,” as well as pay
tribute to Art Sieving, a vaudevillian who was his mentor.
The show was conceived by Johnson along with showbiz veterans Murphy Cross and
Paul Kreppel and directed by Cross and Kreppel.
