The Light in the Piazza
Location: Vivian Beaumont Theater, 150 West 65th Street, New York
Hours: Varies by performance
Admission: $65-$90
Appearing at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theater, The Light in the
Piazza is certainly a musical of a different era. Set in 1950s Italy and based
on the novel of the same name by Elizabeth Spencer, The Light in the Piazza is
more reminiscent of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals of days gone by and far
removed from the light and airy jukebox musicals of today.
The Light in the Piazza tells the story of a
mother and daughter as they travel through Italy in the summer of 1953. The daughter,
who is 20 years old but mentally "slow", is wooed by a young Italian man
determined to be her suitor.
The mother is torn between protecting her
daughter from her feisty Florentine would-be lover and allowing her daughter to
experience the joys of true love.
Famed Broadway director Mike Nichols takes
the reigns and produces an unforgettable evening at the theater.
The characters in this musical are all delightful
in their own way and there are no real villains in The Light in the Piazza, just a
slightly overbearing mother. The characters are deep and interesting and the melodies
are the kind you keep singing even after you've left the theater.
