Overview:
Deep-voiced James Earl Jones takes over the role made famous in the cinema by Henry Fonda in the new stage version of On Golden Pond at Broadway's Cort Theater.

Jones, who's won two Tony awards for past Broadway appearances in Fences and The Great White Hope, portrays retired New England professor Norman Thayer who, at the play's opening, has decided to spend one final summer at his lake house in Maine with wife Ethel, portrayed by Leslie Uggams.

Dubbed a comedy-drama, the subject matter concerns a fiction writer in a totalitarian state who is questioned about the gruesome content of his stories, especially because similar incidents to those described in his books have been occurring around town.

The couple winds up being saddled with the young son of their
estranged daughter's current fiance. The result is a lesson in fatherhood for stodgy Norman and the release of years of pent up anger and bitterness by Chelsea, who resents her father's closeness to the boy.

The play, however, isn't all seriousness. There are plenty of humorous and touching scenes and both Jones and Uggams are as comfortable with comedy as they are with the heartwrenching moments in this play. The result is a play with believable multi-dimensional characters that tell a story that could be part of anyone's family.
