Overview:
Playwright Edward Albee wrote many dark, caustic plays, but critics claim that "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" is truly his masterpiece.

Albee, who has won three Pulitzer prizes in his lifetime, is famous for his stories about dysfunctional individuals and families. Much like his award winning play "The Goat: Or Who is Sylvia", "Who's Afraid..." is a stark portrayal of a marriage gone sour.

Kathleen Turner plays Martha, a role that was first played by Uta Hagen on Broadway in 1962 and Elizabeth Taylor on screen in 1966. Actor Bill Irwin, who's done other Albee productions, stars as husband George.

Critics note that Albee, who won a Tony award for the 1962 version of his play, has a knack for combining absurdity and realism. Indeed, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" ushered in a new era of American theater and even though mainstream audiences were shocked by the profane banter between Martha and George, Albee became the 2nd most staged playwrite on college campuses in the 60s, following closely behind William Shakespeare.
