The Apollo Theater is a legend. It is known as the place where many of the African American singers and comedians got their break in the show business career and took their first steps as performers. The theater opened in 1913 as a burlesque hall. It was not until Sid Cohen bought the theater in 1934

that the famous performers went on stage. The likes of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald gave the theater much credibility.

But the success did not last long. After a change in ownership, the theater was forced to close its doors in the 70's. Finally, the theater was reopened and it was declared as a national landmark during the 80's.

Although many things have changed for the Apollo Theater, one thing remains the same and that is the Amateur Night Show. Want-to-be performers flock to the theater for the once-in-a lifetime opportunity to be discovered.
