The History Boys is a treat for New York’s theatre audiences. This
production of Alan Bennett’s play was first presented by the National
Theatre of Great Britain original London cast and Tony Award winning
director Nicholas Hytner.
The production, centering around a group of bright,
funny boys in pursuit of all the sixth-grade pleasures in life – sex, sports and a place
at university, won all three major theatrical awards for Best Play: the Olivier, Evening
Standard, and the London Critics' Circle Awards. Hytner won the award for Best Director.
Packed with great one-liners and considered to
be Bennett’s best work, to date, “The History Boys” also features a headmaster obsessed
with results, a history teacher who thinks the headmaster’s an idiot, a maverick
English teacher in conflict with a young, shrewd
supply teacher and all the usual staff conflicts that occur when children and education
are involved.
But overarching the chaotic adult relationships are
the pure, straight-forward quirky desires of the boys in all their adolescent discovery and
dreams about the often-uncertain future…definitely a treat-filled experience by any measure.
Use New York City kids and make New York City fun for the kids...and you!
