Mary Poppins is one of the most beloved tales of all time, and the latest
musical version, after a long and successful run at London’s Prince Edward
Theatre, is heading to Broadway.
Based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the
classic Walt Disney film, the show centers on the title character, a nanny who changes
the lives of a banker and his two high-spirited and mischievous children.
As the show moves from scene to scene, the
family is pulled apart and reassembled, with lessons learned and relationships
strengthened by a certain FLYING nanny!
The production boasts songs from the film
courtesy of Richard M.
Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, including such
classics as “Chim Chim Cheree,” “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”
There also are new tunes by George Stiles and
Anthony Drewe, and a book by Julian Fellowes. Richard Eyre and Matthew Bourne
are the directors.
In London, critics and patrons alike have raved.
Most of the acclaim declared that the new production manages to be fresh and invigorating
while remaining faithful to the original source material.
