The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Location: Circle in the Square Theater, 1633 Broadway, New York
Hours: Varies by performance
Admission: $95
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee doesn’t sound like the title of a hit
Broadway musical, but this show, often described as cute, adorable, and even
hilarious has been a huge hit with audiences.
A quick look at the title may indicate the
fact that this appears to be a show for kids. However, while children will certainly
enjoy the fun music and the quirky characters (adults portraying adolescents), the
truth is that they’ll probably miss a lot of the jokes. That’s okay. Its diverse appeal
makes it a show that is truly for the whole family.
Families will certainly enjoy the theater, which
has been converted into a middle school gymnasium, complete with bleachers for the audience
and a basketball court that’s located front and center.
There’s even a little audience participation which
actually allows the show to change a little with every production.
The length, just 90 minutes long with no intermission,
is also ideal for children who may not be able to sit through longer productions.
The show won two Tony Awards last year and the talented
cast continues to impress New York audiences.
Use New York City kids and make New York City fun for the kids...and you!
