Sweeney Todd, another of this year’s Broadway revival musicals, tells a rather
macabre story set in gray, dank Victorian England. First introduced to Broadway
audiences in 1980, this masterpiece by great musical composer Stephen Sondheim
will no doubt be as popular in 2005 as it was 25 years ago.
Sweeney Todd tells the story of the title character,
better known to all as “The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”, who sets up a rather interesting
business arrangement with the owner of the pie shop which occupies the space below his barbershop.
If you don’t know the plot, you’ll be momentarily shocked,
but will still find the story humorous and entertaining.
The musical score is amazing as well, boasting both
dramatic narrative-type songs and enchanting ballads.
Broadway great Patti LuPone plays pie maker Mrs. Lovett,
a role first introduced by the incredible Angela Lansbury. The villainous Sweeney Todd is
portrayed by Michael Cerveris, who recently won a Tony Award for his role in the 2004 revival
of Assassins.
