Tarzan
Location: Richard Rodgers Theatre, 226 W. 46th St., New York
Hours: Varies by performance
Admission: $85-$100
Tarzan is a brand-new and lavishly outfitted production of the familiar tale courtesy of
Disney Theatrical Productions. There'll be a definite star quality in the production,
which expands on Disney’s 1999 animated film.
The director (and designer of scenery and costumes)
is multiple Tony-winner Bob Crowley, of “Aida” and “Carousel” fame.
Perennial Grammy winner and durable superstar Phil
Collins wrote the music and lyrics, and the book is by another Tony Winner, David Henry
Hwang (“M. Butterfly”). Meryl Tankard designed the choreography.
The story? Naturally, it’s based on the Edgar
Rice Burroughs book: The bronzed and brawny Tarzan was raised by apes, and is human in
appearance only.
He meets and falls in love with the lovely, vulnerable
Jane, who is accompanying her father on a trip to Africa to search for gorillas. It’s
one of the most unusual love stories in all of literature.
On Broadway, Josh Strickland stars as Tarzan and
Jenn Gambatese as Jane. The cast also features Merle Dandridge, Kala Shuler Hensley and
Chester Gregory II.
