The Bronx Zoo is
considered the world's greatest zoo! As the flagship of the largest network of
metropolitan zoos in the country, the Bronx Zoo is the heart of the Wildlife
Conservation Society and their work to save wildlife and wild places around the
globe.
With award-winning, cutting-edge exhibits featuring over 4,000 animals, there is
no other zoo in the world that offers the diversity, superb viewing, and
world-renowned expertise that assures a rewarding experience and the knowledge
that visitors can make a difference in the world around them.
Whether you're nose-to-nose with Western lowland gorillas in the famous Congo
Gorilla Forest, spotting snow leopards in the naturalistic Himalayan Highlands
Habitat, or experiencing almost an acre of an indoor Asian rain forest, you're
always within roaring distance of the world's most amazing wildlife. In the end,
you'll know that your admission fees went to a conservation organization that
has more expert researchers in the field than any other.
Congo Gorilla Forest Exhibit
This huge 6.5 acre African rain forest environment explains WHAT a rain forest
is, HOW it works, WHICH animals make it their home, WHY it is threatened and HOW
people can help save it. With more than 300 animals, including one of the
largest breeding groups of lowland gorillas, it is the most spectacular exhibit
ever created at the Bronx Zoo.
Himalayan Highlands
Open year round, the Himalayan Highlands exhibit welcomes you to the high passes
and remote mountaintops in Nepal without the aid of a sherpa. This one acre,
nautralistic habitat provides a home for the highly endangered snow leopards,
red pandas, Temminck's tragopan (a kind of pheasant), and white-naped cranes.
A winding path will lead you among rhododendrons, oaks, and conifers, around
boulders, under cave-like formations, and across bridges spanning ravines.
Consistent with the Zoo's attention to detail, a Tibetan monk was commissioned
to decorate the graphic pylons scattered throughout the exhibit. Trust us -
you'll forget about your stressful days when you make eye contact with one of
these big cats!
JungleWorld
A must-see at the Bronx Zoo! Enter a 37,000 square foot re-creation of an Asian
rain forest -complete with mangrove swamp and scrub forest. It's considered one
of the most ambitious indoor zoological exhibitions ever created and features
780 animals representing 99 species.
Here, silvered leaf monkeys, white-cheeked gibbons, black leopards, Malayan
tapirs, green peafowl, and Asian hornbills live among the real and artificial
trees, vines, and Asian plants - many in bloom.
Throughout JungleWorld are reminders that the world's rain forest are
disappearing at an alarming rate. As you exit JungleWorld, look for the "jungle
countdown" sign. It is a digital counter which started on opening day, counting
the number of acres of jungle still remaining. The next sign is a "population
count-up."
