Mamma Mia! was the first of the so-called “juke box” musicals to become a big hit. With a musical score featuring the hits of Swedish musical group Abba, this Broadway musical was the surprise hit of 2001 and the cast is still performing for sell-out crowds at nearly every performance. Wonderful Abba tunes such as Dancing Queen, The Winner Takes It All, Take A Chance on Me, Knowing Me, Knowing You and Super Trouper are interspersed with the story of Sophie, a young lady who’s about to be a bride. While her mother is there to help with the festivities and attend the events of Sophie’s special day, Sophie’s dad won’t be there because she never met him. After delving into her mom’s diary, Sophie invites 3 of mom’s former boyfriends to the festivities, hoping that when they arrive, she’s able to figure out which one is her father. Mamma Mia! has been continuously acclaimed by critics - even a half decade after it first opened - as one of the most entertaining and energetic musicals on Broadway and a musical experience that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
